OK, my house is a storage less, cluttered mess! Seriously. We are currently house hunting…looking for a house that has storage, an extra bedroom, and honestly one that just feels open & spacious. But, let’s be honest, living in California, open & spacious pretty much sounds like a joke! In order to get that out here, you’re pretty much paying at least $1 million. And, sorry, but ya girl ain’t got a million bucks! (Sadly lol) So, in the meantime of living in a house much too small for my growing family, I am finding as many ways possible to make every square inch of this place not only functional, but STYLISH. Insert how my DIY chic office workstation!
The Deets On How I Turned My Unused Bar Cabinet into a Chic Office Workstation
I know that functional is definitely possible even in the tiniest of spaces (don’t believe me, check out the Tiny House series on HGTV). So, on my quest to declutter my house and to make every room functional, I’ve had to think really hard about what we need in this house and what we don’t. As much as I love home decor, the first thing I realized is that I can no longer be all about styling a room. Like, “oh, how cute would this ridiculously oversized chair look in this tiny @ss little room that is half of it’s size?!” Yea, that’s not going to work anymore..lol
So, I’ve been taking inventory, thinking of course of what we need to make this house functional. But also, how we’d like it to look. I’ve been dreaming of having my own Pinterest worthy office space for quite some time now. But, truth is, I knew it wouldn’t be it’s own room, because WE AIN’T GOT NO ROOM! I needed a spot that would really function as an office space, but of course wouldn’t take up too much room (because 100% of no space, is how much space? lol).
Where I Started
Insert my “bar”…yes, I’m legit using quotes because this piece of furniture has NEVER in its life been used as a bar. (Although, that’s been it’s entire purpose since it’s birth). I bought this bar cabinet right before the holidays when we first moved into this house (2016). I needed a place to serve drinks for our parties (we love hosting!). But, then my husband turned our garage into a “man cave” with a fully stocked bar. So, guess where our guests go for cocktails during every party? Yea, not my little wannabe “bar”, that’s for sure.
So, since I’ve been needing a little office space of my own (and in-bed no longer works when your hubs wants to go to sleep at 9pm) and this “bar” was only being utilized as a catcall, I decided to turn it into my DIY chic office workstation.
Where I Shopped
Now, If you followed my stories on Instagram than you know I only went to one place to turn this drabby ol’ wannabe bar cabinet into my chic office workstation. That place of course is the one and only Home Goods (all hail Home Goods!). Literally, everything from the adjustable bar stool to that tiniest little green plant (can you spot it?), was purchased from Home Goods.
Before hitting up my local Home Goods, I made a list of everything I would need. Items that were both functional and decorative (because, hello! It still needed to look cute!). My BIGGEST want and need was an adjustable chair. Because, hello! Your girl ain’t got no space up in this house for a traditional office chair! I needed one that I could tuck neatly into the bottom cabinet. One that would fit snug, but wouldn’t impede on the shelving and other spacing I needed to use. This one was perfect, so affordable (under $40), and it’s PINK!
The Functional Pieces
Next up, was the functional pieces I needed for my DIY chic office workstation, like a pen holder! I legit fell in love with this lazy Susan style one. And what’s not to love, it’s gold and glass (super chic and on trend). AND it not only can hold my pens and pencils, but also my note cards, post it’s, sticky tabs AND papers clips! Truly functional and again, super affordable (Under $13). Love it!
I added the $4 white corner piece for the bottom cabinet, to neatly store other random things like cords and that champagne bottle. Wondering about that bottle? It was the one I opened to celebrate the first day this blog went live. So, you know, it needed it’s own storage space. I use the cabinet shelf to store my camera, camera equipment, my laptop, and lighting equipment. I still need to tie up all of the loose cords. So, I will probably get some more baskets to store them on that shelf, but for now, this works!
The Decorative Touches
I already had some items I previously purchased from Home Goods like the pink roses, the sparkly frame, and the little green cactus. But, I wanted to add some more color and style. So, I picked up the larger photo frame (to add a little more height and variation on that shelf) for $12, the pink candle for $4, and the gold baskets at the top of the cabinet for $5 each. I didn’t want to over do it with the decor, just wanted to add a little chic to it, ya know.
For this DIY chic office workstation, I only spent less than $100…altogether it came out to like $80 something! Can you believe that?!! Goes to show, you can make any area more functional AND chic and not break the bank!
