Out with the old and in with the new.
That’s how the saying goes. And it is for sure that time of year to peruse through your closets (all of them..don’t think I don’t know 😉) to decide what will stay and what will go.
Some dread this, but I love it! I’m typically a hoarder when it comes to my clothing. But, in my defense, so many things come back into style. I used to wear slip on heels in high school and tell me those haven’t made several comebacks! Or how about corduroy? Corduroy was HUGE this past fall, so I was super happy that I held on to my corduroy jacket for the past 10+ years! (See my post Falling for Corduroy).
I know for a lot of people it’s really hard deciding what to keep and what to toss. I think we all wish we could have a Carrie Bradshaw moment by grabbing our best gals and some champagne for a full blown try on sesh. So that THEY can be the ones to tell us what to keep, pack, or toss. I also wish I had Carrie Bradshaw’s closet but that’s a whole other story! 😂
But I want to make things easy for you beautiful people. So, to help, I’m giving you my tips for spring cleaning your closet. These are the questions I ask myself when trying to decide what to keep, pack, or toss (i.e. donate).
Here Are My Three Tips For Spring Cleaning Your Closet
Pack Up Your Go To’s
Everyone has their go-to winter items. Whether it’s your favorite sweaters, jackets, boots, etc. Make sure to pack those items first and get them out of your way. With the exception of a few light weight cardigans and sweaters I can wear with shorts or over a bathing suit, I typically pack up my favorite winter items so that I can make room for all of the clothes & shoes that I’ll be buying come spring time. Some great storage items to use are these, these, and these for keeping all of your fave items prestine during those dormant months.
Create Two Piles: What Fits and What Doesn’t
Now, just because something doesn’t fit right now, doesn’t mean it won’t ever. So, with that in mind, don’t just throw something out because it doesn’t fit right now. But, do be realistic. If it’s a piece of clothing that you absolutely love, and know you can totally tone up a little to be able to squeeze back into it, then don’t toss it. I have a section in one part of my closet that I keep my “doesn’t fit right now, but will soon” items. And the funny thing is, I’ve actually been able to take items out of it every year and wear them because of weight loss or weight gain (a lot of items I had kept in this pile actually came in handy when I got pregnant).
And sticking with the honesty train, if you know you won’t ever fit back into it again, then yes, it’s time to part ways. Same goes for items that fit, but you know you just won’t ever wear that item again…time to toss it (i.e. donate it, sell it, whichev). But you REALLY got to think about this. A lot of trends come back into style a few years later so if you really just don’t like it, don’t even know why you ever bought it, then continue on with the parting of the ways. If you’re just not sure, then I’d hang on to it if I were you. If an item fits and it’s still your jam, by all means, keep it!
Get Rid of Tired Looking Clothing
Even if it is your jam, if it’s run down, has holes, seriously unthreading, faded (and not in a good way), then it’s time to toss it. With all the incredibly cute clothes out there just waiting to be bought and stuffed into your closet, you just don’t have the time (and probably not the closet space) to waste on old, drab clothing. If it can’t be fixed or revived, sorry babes, “let it go, let it gooooo”! (Yes, that was Frozen…hey, I got a 2 year old daughter, Elsa is life right now!).
So, there you have it! My three tips that I live by when it’s time to make room in my closet. To stay current, I do this twice a year (towards the end of winter, and towards the end of summer). I find it more manageable to break it up this way, but to each their own. You may prefer doing one overhaul a year or maybe every two years? Or maybe you just wait until your closet screams “don’t stuff me with one more item or I’ll burst at the seams!”. No matter how often you clean out your closet, I hope you find these tips useful.
