It’s the first week of January and with it comes a serious drop in the temperature. Yes, my friends, winter is here! Hello cold winds, rainy days, and for many of you, snow. And with all of that comes a serious need for a wardrobe adjustment. Light cardigans and off the shoulder sweaters won’t cut it anymore. It’s time to invest in some winter wardrobe staples.
Now, even though we hardly need winter clothes very long here in Southern California, I tend to keep certain items in my closet year round in the off chance we get a longer winter than usual or a day of weird weather (it poured cats & dogs the day before my wedding in late July!!!) or if I travel to colder climates. That way I have my go-to’s on any given day, throughout the year.
So, to get you going on the right track this winter too, I’ve made a list of some absolute winter wardrobe staples that you’ll want to buy this month, if you don’t already own them. Might as well take advantage of all of those sales going on right now, right? #anyexcusetoshop
Your List of Winter Wardrobe Staples
Coats
A rain/snow coat, teddy coat, and a chic wool (wool blend) coat are winter staples to keep warm and look fabulous in the process. Opt for longer options to be able to dress them up or down.
Sweaters
Oversized sweaters and sweater dresses will be your go to this winter. With their versatility, they could be worn with leggings, jeans, skirts, or solo (if long enough) with OTK boots. You’ll definitely want a good stash of these in your closet!
Jeans & Leggings
Speaking of jeans and leggings, you’ll want to invest in some go-to, fit like a glove pairs this winter. A staple for every wardrobe. Dressed up like jeans and a chunky sweater with some sweet pumps, or dressed down like leggings, a teddy coat, and a pair of Uggs for a casual comfy look.
Boots
OTK, ankle and casual boots, you’ll want a pair of each to set your wardrobe off to a good start. OTK and ankle boots go great with jeans, leggings, and dresses, while a more casual style like a pair of UGGs are perfect for leggings or jeans and a cozy pullover.
Beanies & Hats
Ok, I can’t be the only one who’s hair turns into a huge frizz ball as soon as it comes into contact with a little rain or dewy weather, right? Time to call on those beanies and hats! Cover those frizzies and look cute in the process. These pom pom beanies are super popular right now, and you can never go wrong with a classic large brim fedora hat.

The weather has been a huge tease in Illinois this winter!!! It’s been like spring weather and barely snowed at all. Which is okay, of course I don’t mind it! But January and February are always the coldest and worst months of the year. So I’m not getting my hopes up that it’s gonna stay nice for long 😭😭. The plan is to move down to Georgia within the next few months though to be by my husband’s family, so I’m hoping we can escape the cold!! Love the items you posted. I actually just bought both of those beanies last week! And they just arrived yesterday. I’m in love ❤️❤️❤️
