Friends, I can’t begin to tell you how excited I get for the month of October! I have to admit that I’m a little bit biased. October is my birthday month AND my birthday actually falls on Halloween, so…you know. But, more than that…to me, it’s the beginning of the fall season. The leaves begin to change colors, the nights get a little cooler, and you can get a direct IV of pumpkin spice lattes at your local Starbucks drive-thru (lol imagine!).
I think my fave part of all, is the spooky fun that comes with October. Jack-o-lanterns, Ghosts, and Ghouls…oh my! Being a Halloween baby, I would always plan my costumes months in advance and really dress up for the occasion. Even my adult birthday parties were themed. My friends knew that if they were attending, they had to come in costume! Maybe that’s why I love Halloween so much. It makes you feel like a kid again, but you know, without judgment (lol).
My husband and I have been together for over a decade, and every year we’ve worn a couple’s costume. Here’s a list of some fun ones we’ve done:
- Kurt Cobain & Courtney Love
- Clark Kent & Louis Lane
- Dark Angel & Devil
- Britney Spears & Kevin Federline
- Minnie Mouse & Mickie Mouse
- Flapper Girl & Gangster
But, now that I have kids of my own, I have to say that Halloween is even MORE fun! Seeing my daughter light up when she gets to try on her new costume is just heart bursting. And she legit counts down the days until she can get ALLLL the candy (naturally her fave part). She’s 3 now so she really knows characters and can pick her own costume. Which honestly, helps me a lot because then I can pick the rest of the family’s costumes accordingly.
I know family costume ideas can be such a pain to choose from. I’ve only had to do it for a couple of years now, and it’s a task. The truth is there’s several things to consider when picking costumes. What will the weather be like? How much do you want to spend? Will you buy costumes or make them? How many family members will you need costumes for? And, how dressed up do you want to get?
Now that I take the kids trick or treating on Halloween, I haven’t really wanted to wear a full on costume. I guess the thought of walking around all night in a Marie Antoinette gown & wig just isn’t my jam. So, I’ve been finding ways to take costume ideas, and dress them down.
For example, last year we all dressed up as “Baby Shark Family”. We wore Shark hoodies that we found on Amazon, and wore name plates saying Baby Shark, Sister Shark, Mama Shark, and Daddy Shark. It was a huge hit, even though it didn’t take much effort (or money) at all!
Another one to add to the great casual family costume ideas list is Princess themes. One year Mila was Cinderella. So, Babers was Prince Charming and I was the Fairy Godmother. Mila’s costume was store bought while we found Babers the perfect “Prince Charming” sweater (Amazon) that he wore with jeans. I found a simple blue hoodie, blue button up shirt, and the cutest pink bowtie that I wore with jeans. I carried a Cinderella wand and BAM, hello Fairy Godmother!
The most important part about wearing a costume is to be comfortable!!! Who wants to wear something bulky, itchy, or generally uncomfortable. For me, comfortable means comfy shoes to walk around in and some type of long sleeve so I’m not freezing. I like being casual while still putting forth some effort to look in character.
If you like to be more casual with your costumes too, then you’re just in luck! I have some other family costume ideas that you can totally dress down but be dressed up. Did that make any sense? lol
