Hey babes,
It’s finally here!!! My tutorial for how I curl my hair fast with a curling wand! You ladies have been asking me for this tutorial and I couldn’t be more excited to deliver!
But, before we get started we need to discuss a few things about my lack of skills in the technology department 🤦🏻♀️ This video took me DAYS to put together because I’m just not all that savvy with this editing stuff (at least not yet😜). And, to be totally transparent, it was my first real tutorial 🙊. What that means is mama done made a few verbal boo boos while filming. The biggest one is I keep saying curling iron when I mean curling wand (duh, right?! My bad!). The other is I say that I need to get a “real curling iron”. What I meant was I need to get the right size curling wand (the strugggggle!!! lol).
Now, let me give you some back ground on why I curl my hair with a wand. Prior to having my beautiful babies, my hair was actually naturally curly! I never had to do much to it. I’d wash it, add some mousse to it and bam! I’d be out the door with big loose curls in no time. But, as soon as I had baby #1, those curls started fading away. And then when baby #2 came along, pshh, out the window they went (along with any hope for sleep, toned abs, and free time…but that’s a whole other story 😂). And I didn’t just loose my curls, I lost some volume as well.
So, I needed a quick and easy way to style my hair. I needed something that would still make me feel put together but, with minimal time & effort required. Because, if you’re a mom, you know there just never seems to be enough time to get yourself AND the babies ready to go out. Which equates to mama’s hair always going up in a bun or ponytail. Therefore, quick and easy is the name of the game!
I googled, pinterested, and YouTubed a lot of How to Curl My Hair videos thinking ugh, this looks like way too much work! These girls were curling 1 inch pieces of hair at a time and all I could think, with the amount of hair I have, was that this would take me forever!
And they were using traditional curling irons which for some reason have always been a headache for me to use. Probably because I’ve never really cared to learn…maybe? 🤔 IDK! But, then I stumbled across this one video where the woman used a curling wand and thought “Yes, this looks easy enough!”.
I went to the store and bought my first curling wand, some hairspray, and some hair clips. I blow dryed my hair just enough to make it dry and then I got to curling my hair. It looked great and I was happy with the result BUT, who the heck has time to blow dry hair AND curl it when you got babies clambering at you 24/7!? Not I!
And that’s how I started learning my little tricks in curling my hair with a curling wand. I started experimenting with clean hair versus day old or two day old hair. I would wash my hair one night and let it air dry then the next day I tried curling it.
My experiment was basically to determine if a) I would even be able to curl it and still have it look good, b) see if I could cut out that whole blow drying step (because ain’t nobody got time for that), and c) see if I could start cutting down the time it took to get the job done altogether.
You’ll be happy to know that I was able to do all three! With the curling wand, I was able to take bigger sections of hair at a time and wrap them around it, so that I didn’t have to spend so much time with these little 1 inch pieces that everyone was suggesting. Bigger sections curled at a time equates to less time spent curling, yay! With a traditional curling iron, there really isn’t much space under the clamp to do this.
I also figured out that the tighter you wrap your hair around the curling wand, the tighter and higher your curls will be. Want looser curls? Space out your hair more as you wrap it around the curling wand. Another trick that gives you more volume up top, is to twist your hair while you wrap it around the curling wand (which is what I do). Using a tapered curling wand will easily help you achieve this look. I have both a tapered and regular curling wand. I tend to use my regular curling wand if I want bigger even curls.
Bonus Tip: Once I curl my hair I can usually wear it for 3 or 4 days. Here are some photos of what it looks like day of, day after, and two days after. Sometimes I just love how my hair falls looser a couple of days after curling it, and for some reason, that look is always hard to achieve the day I curl it. So, I will purposely curl my hair a day or two before an event so that the curls will loosen just the way I want the day of that event.
NOTE: If after a day or two you’re feeling like your hair needs a pick me up, you can take individual pieces (chunks, sections, whatever you want to call them) and just curl those again. It’ll give your hair that “just curled” look, without having to redo everything. If the top of your hair feels too flat, use a volumizing dry shampoo. I love this one.
